Woodstock!

Between 10&5 and CityMob commissioned a bunch of us illustrators (Me, Mike Tymbios, Jaco Haasbroek, Daniel Ting Chong, Cris Slabber and Simon Berndt) to make a poster of what we like most about Cape Town. I had been planing to do some Woodstock buildings anyways to try out a newish style so I ended up doing this. I managed to slip my studio and my home in there somewhere.

But more to the point, you can buy an A2 digital print of this artwork for an incredible R120 over at CityMob. Wow what a flipping incredible deal!

The deal runs until 18 July. After that you'll have to pay "the big bucks" (probably R240) for a quality bedroom door accessory like this.

A Body Of Work

The "A Body Of Work Exhibition" is opening tomorrow night (25 January 2011). It is an exhibition of really difficult to paint sculptures of some guy's hand, that coincides with the International Tattoo Convention that's going on in Cape Town on the weekend. The customized hands will be auctioned for Write On Africa, a charity organization that goes around painting on creches and peoples homes in previously/currently disadvantaged communities.

There will also be other artwork by the exhibiting artists available. And Beer.

So put on your best hipster outfit and come on down to the Woodstock Industrial Centre tomorrow evening and hopefully a trendy fashion blogger will take a photo of you standing next to someone cool. You might even look at or buy some artwork.

So there is this huge exhibition happening at the Woodstock Industrial Centre on Friday. It's the launch of an exciting new residency program that A Word Of Art and the WIC are opening.

Senyol, Justin and I are all showing work as well as most of my favorite South African artists.

We Are Visual Gallery will be colonizing the Woodstock Industrial Centre from Hamburg Germany. Starting in December Brent Dahl,Marc Einsiedel and Felix Jung will stay for six weeks and this will culminate with an installation made of materials and objects salvaged from the street...s of Cape Town as well as a three day exhibition of paper works from the Gaengeviertel artist squat in Hamburg and South African artists working with /A WORD OF ART.We will also be welcoming artist TIKA (ZH/BRLN/RIO) who will begin her three month residency from January funded by Pro Helvetia, One K and the WIC.

It's Christmas

Christmas is probably my second favorite holiday of the year. My first being my birthday, because I still get presents but don't have to buy any for other people.

But I still love the crap out of Christmas so I made these spiff Christmas cards for you to send to your estranged relatives and other people you don't really know/like well enough to get them something that's actually nice.

So all you need is a pair of scissors, sellotape, some fancy red/marble paper from EST Graphics, that bucket full of 20c coins that you're too embarrassed to use at the shops and a trip to the city library and all you Christmas card needs will be sorted.

Then after you've photocopied and cut everything just sellotape some silver coins in the designated spots and stick them in the mail. If the person lives in a different country don't bother with the coins because they won't be able to use them, but maybe put Christmasy stickers over the coin parts so that they don't feel like you love them less than the people who got money from you.

And because I have so much Holy/Christmas Spirit I'm giving these cards away as a free download! Get Some!

This is a poem that I wrote last night after it came to me in a dream. You probably won't like it because it speaks uncomfortable truths about your entire life.

How To Disappoint Your Parents

So last week I ruined my foot forever and decided to document the event by writing this DIY tattoo tutorial on how to put ink into your skin yourself and make your parents think that you are an idiot.

Okay these are what I used. A needle (obviously), A pencil to tie the needle too, cotton thread, alcohol swabs to be sterile or whatever (although I think maybe surgical spirits would have been a better choice), A koki pen to draw your plans on, Ink, a cup for the ink and medical supplies for afterwards.

If someone else is doing it for you/more than one of you is doing it you will need a different ink well, a pair of gloves and new needle/device for each person so you don't get infected with HIV germs or whatever. This is South Africa after all and we could really do with less dead people.

So, after I had sterilized it I tied the needle tightly to the pencil with the thread.

Then after doing a few half hitches at the top to keep it tight, I started coiling the thread around the needle (like a guitar string). You will need to coil it all the way so that there is about 0.5-1mm of needle showing at the top.

The thread acts a s a way to keep the ink on the needle so you don't have too keep dipping for every hole you poke. It does reduce accuracy a bit though, You'll see later what I mean...

Then I cleaned where I was going to stick the needle in. My apologies in advance for the siff feet.

Then you start sticking the needle into your skin poking in a rhythmic motion like doing a bunch of O's in Morse-code. This is where I discovered after about a minute that I had not coiled the thread close enough to the needle point and instead of ink going in, blood was just coming out.

So after a quick adjustment I was back on my way and it started working.

A problem with this technique is that excess ink builds up immediately and you can't always see what you are doing and there are these occasional scattered dots that make the tattoo a bit blurry.

And there you have it. Your parents now have a son who tattooed YO on his own toe.

Thanks Justin Southey for taking the photos. Don't do this if you ever intend to wear sandals to a job interview.
